East African Court of Justice, Arusha, Tanzania, 28th May 2024: Law students from Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya commenced a month-long internship program at the East African Court of Justice. The internship aims to provide valuable learning opportunities for the students as it is designed to offer hands on experience, as well as equip the students with the necessary skills and knowledge on litigating matters before the Court.
Her Worship, Ms. Christine Mutimura, the Deputy Registrar of the Court, extended a warm welcome to the students, and expressed her belief in the internship program not only providing the students with a valuable opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting, but also contributing to shaping the next generation of leaders in the legal profession. She extended her gratitude to Daystar University for their longstanding collaboration with the Court in facilitating the internship program which has attracted over sixty (60) students in the past three (3) years.
Dr. Maurice Ajwang Owuor, the Dean of the School of Law at Daystar University in his remarks, emphasized the pivotal role of international internships in the students’ educational journey. He highlighted the distinctive advantage that internship opportunity provides, equipping students with the necessary skills to engage effectively with the East African Court of Justice. Dr. Ajwang further proposed exploring other collaborative ventures, including the development of tailor-made short courses for the benefit of court staff.
In his capacity as the Student Representative, Eleaser Kokonya commended the Court for the enriching experience the students had gained since their arrival a week ago. Their expectations include gaining insights into the Court’s operations, jurisdiction, procedural rules, case filing procedures, and access to information.
A total of nineteen students are currently participating in the internship program, with six stationed at the EACJ-Sub-Registry in Nairobi and thirteen at the Court in Arusha.
About the EACJ
The East African Court of Justice (EACJ or ‘the Court’), is one of the Organs of the East African Community established under Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community. The Court was established in November 2001, its key mandate is to ensure the adherence to law in the interpretation and application of and compliance with the EAC Treaty. Arusha is the temporary seat of the Court until the Summit determines its permanent seat. The Court’s sub-registries are located in the capitals of the following Partner States: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania.
